A Terrible and Sublime Liturgy: Sustaining Mission to the Suffering in Beauvois' "Of Gods and Men"

Anne M. Windholz

The essay is an exploration of the catechetical possibilities of the award-winning film Of Gods and Men (dir. Xavier Beauvois, France, 2010) for healthcare workers and spiritual caregivers. The Tibhirine monks of war-torn 1990s Algeria find that persevering in their call to medical ministry and interreligious dialogue demands a challenging integration of liturgy, spirituality, and mission. Windholz analyzes how the film represents these missionaries seeking sustenance and courage from their communal liturgy and prayer; from the spirituality which ties them to the land, to the people, and to their God; and from their mission to do Christ’s healing work among the poor and the marginalized.
